As part of a visual reimagining project for one of our favorite films, I chose to redesign the poster for Promising Young Woman. Rather than echoing the film’s original, hyper-feminine promotional materials, I pivoted toward a darker, more introspective tone—centering the design around Cassie’s diary, a seemingly minor prop that quietly tracks the emotional weight of the story. I wanted viewers to confront the diary’s presence and reflect on its deeper significance: why she marks each page, and what those marks truly represent.
I experimented with various color palettes—ranging from icy blues to murky greens—ultimately landing on a green-toned design that better captured the film’s unsettling undercurrents and themes of retribution. The typography, too, was carefully chosen to evoke a sense of distress, with a scratched, etched-in look reminiscent of the diary entries themselves. This project challenged me to rethink visual symbolism and prioritize emotional resonance in storytelling, even through the subtlest of design choices.
